The History of Lilybank

On 27 March 1878 Samuel Cochrane became the first settler to take up land in what is now Stratford, when he purchased 110 acres. He named the block Lilybank and grew maize, English potatoes, sweet potatoes and pumpkins. Cochrane built a homestead here in 1878.

In 1889 Alexander Frederick John Draper (1863 – 1928) bought the block. Draper was the eldest of 17 children. He was just 21 when he arrived in Cairns in 1884, as manager of the Bank of Australasia. He purchased Lilybank 5 years later. He developed a horse stud, grew pineapples and bananas and sold citrus saplings. The Drapers were very hospitable, holding many functions in their beautiful garden.

Draper became a leading citizen; he was Mayor of Cairns and sat on many committees. With wife Mary Georgina, Draper had one (1) son and six (6) daughters: all of the girls were born at Lilybank. He was described as the ‘Father of Cairns’ at his funeral in 1928.

Draper owned Lilybank for over 30 years before selling it to Mr H Greenwood. In August 1927 the original house was destroyed by fire. Greenwood rebuilt the house and later sold it to Mr Hardwick. In 1992 Lilybank became a B&B guest house and current owners, Linda and Scott Ashworth took over the property in October 2013.
